Papers of Samuel Allen contain accounts, 1851-1887 (74 items), for the mercantile firm of John & Samuel Allen; accounts 1835-1871 (224 items), many for medical services and some with the firms Dean and Brown and Harris and Gibson, both of Richmond, Va.); correspondence, 1850-1870 (25 items), and other papers, including agreements, 1866-1868 (3 items), with freedmen. Papers of Sarah J. (Harris) Allen include administration accounts, 1871-1883 (14 items), for her husband's estate; accounts, 1856- 1905 (79 items), and correspondence, 1871-1893 (53 items), concerning family and social life and the education of women. Other papers belong to William H. Winfrey (accounts, 1829-1846, for medical services, legal and financial papers), John Harris (accounts, correspondence, and miscellaneous legal papers), Willie (Allen) Hill of Charlotte Court House, Va. (correspondence and accounts), Mrs. Virginia A. Harrison of Lynchburg, Va., and Lillie H. (Allen) Harrison of Buckingham County. Also included is an account book, 1858-1870 (52 p.), of W.H. Davis, Buckingham County, for agricultural operations and the hiring of freedmen.
